The MESMERITE
Now part of the permanent collection at Atlas 9 in Kansas City, Mesmerite functions as both a sculptural landmark and an experiential encounter. Carved from poplar wood and embedded with over 10,000 individually controlled LEDs, the work invites viewers into a state of contemplative attention, encouraging slowness, stillness, and sensory presence. Through its interplay of organic material, luminous technology, and monumental scale, Mesmerite continues an inquiry into how contemporary art can reconnect audiences to nature, embodiment, and awe.
The work explores the dynamic tension between natural materiality and technological presence, honoring the inherent intelligence of the wood while activating it through light. In doing so, it becomes an atmospheric, living presence within the space.
